Nilkanth Temple Forest Hike

A demanding forest ascent to Neelkanth Mahadev on foot, walking the pilgrim trail instead of only driving to the shrine.

Overview

Most people just drive up to Neelkanth Mahadev. This is the pilgrim's way instead: you begin near the spiritual side of Rishikesh and climb to the temple through the forest, on foot, the way it was walked long before the road.

  • A pilgrim forest trail
  • A serious climb
  • Neelkanth Mahadev
  • On foot

Your morning, stage by stage

The hike, stage by stage, in the same shape as our package itineraries: what you do, in order, with a line on each part and what is and isn't included.

  • ~ 5:30 AM · start Included

    Early meet at Laxman Jhula

We meet early at Laxman Jhula, on the temple side of Rishikesh, and set off while it is cool. Your host confirms the exact meeting point and time the evening before.

  • The trail Included

    Into the forest, climbing

The trail enters the forest and begins the long, steady ascent. This is the shape of the whole day: uphill, on stone and dirt, through the trees.

  • Morning Included

    The sustained climb

Hours of steady uphill with short guided breaks as needed. The views open intermittently between the trees. Pace yourself; the guide will.

  • The top Included

    Arrive at Neelkanth Mahadev

You reach the temple complex having climbed to it. There is time to wash, refresh and enter according to the local rules and the day's conditions.

The stages are in order. We haven't fixed exact clock times to each: the day is built around you, so your host confirms the start time and the plan with you. BMR is timing the full route on the ground.

Your route

The pilgrim ascent on foot: from Laxman Jhula in Rishikesh, into the forest and up a long, sustained climb to Neelkanth Mahadev, then the return. Exact distance and elevation are deliberately left provisional here, because public sources disagree and BMR verifies the precise route on the ground before quoting it as fact.

Before you go

This is not a casual walk

It is sustained uphill effort for several hours on a demanding trail. Come only if you are a fit, experienced walker, and tell us honestly about your fitness first.

The ground and the distance

Expect uneven stone, dirt and rocky sections, and a genuinely long day on your feet. Broken-in hiking shoes are essential.

Signal and weather

Mobile connectivity drops on parts of the trail, and mountain weather changes fast. We may suspend the route in unsafe monsoon or landslide conditions.

The temple gets busy

During major pilgrimage periods such as Shravan and Maha Shivratri, crowds and traffic change a lot. We check current conditions before confirming.

Temple etiquette

Cover shoulders and knees, remove footwear where required, and follow the on-site instructions. Access and photography rules are set locally and can change.

Walked by BMR, with a local guide

This is not a route we read about. Someone from BMR has hiked the whole way, up and back, at a normal traveller’s pace, and a local guide who grew up in these hills walks every step of it with you: leading the climb in the dark, knowing the forest turns and the villages you pass, and setting a pace that suits your group. Everything on this page, the times, the ground, the distance, comes from doing it, not from a brochure.

A local guide, the whole way

Your guide is from these hills, knows the forest trail and the resting points, sets a sustainable pace, and reads the mountain weather as it changes.

On foot, honestly

The pilgrim ascent is the whole product. We don't dress up a drive as a trek; you walk it, and we are honest about how hard that is.

The honest bits, first

That this is sustained uphill for hours, that the signal drops, that the weather turns, that the temple gets very busy in pilgrimage season. Before you book.

One host, start to finish

The same BMR host stays with your booking from your first message to your return.

Common questions

How hard is this, really?

Demanding. It is a sustained uphill hike of several hours on uneven ground, a long day on your feet. It is for fit, experienced walkers, not a casual forest stroll.

Is there a car included?

No. This is a foot hike both ways: you climb to Neelkanth Mahadev and return to Rishikesh the same way, on foot. There is no vehicle on the route.

Is there mobile signal?

It is unreliable on parts of the trail. Tell someone your plan and carry what you need to be self-sufficient.

What should I know about the temple?

Neelkanth Mahadev is an active temple. Cover your shoulders and knees, remove footwear where required, and follow the local rules, which can change and get busy in pilgrimage season.

When does it run?

We check conditions live and suspend the route in unsafe monsoon, landslide or closure conditions. Safety decides the day.
