Kunjapuri Temple:
before your 4:30 AM alarm.

Sunrise over the Himalayan peaks from Kunjapuri Temple

Every second guest asks about it once they see the photo: a small white temple on a ridge, the whole Himalayan range turning gold behind it. That’s Kunjapuri, and the sunrise really does look like that — but getting there means a 4:30 AM pickup, so it’s worth knowing exactly what you’re signing up for.

What Kunjapuri actually is

Kunjapuri is one of the Siddha Peeth Shakti temples, sitting at roughly 1,645 metres on a ridge above the Ganga valley, about 45 minutes to an hour’s drive from central Rishikesh. It’s a working temple, not a viewpoint built for tourists — which is exactly why the atmosphere at sunrise feels genuinely still, not staged.

The drive and the climb

The road winds up through forest and small villages in the dark, which is part of the experience — headlights, switchbacks, and the sky only just starting to change colour by the time you park. From the car park, it’s a short climb of stone steps to the temple itself, manageable for most fitness levels but worth knowing about if mobility is a concern.

  • Pickup time: Around 4:30 AM, depending on the season and exact sunrise time.
  • What to bring:A warm layer (it’s genuinely cold pre-dawn, even in summer), water, and a torch or phone light for the steps.
  • Best months:Post-monsoon through winter (October–March) for the clearest Himalayan visibility.

The alarm is the hardest part. Everything after the car door opens is the easy, memorable part.

What the sunrise actually looks like

On a clear morning, the view stretches across layered mountain ridges with the Himalayan snow peaks visible in the distance, the Ganga valley still in shadow below. It’s quiet — a handful of other early risers, temple bells starting up, and very little of the crowd-noise you’d get at a more famous viewpoint.
